Description
Pineapple sage
(Salvia elegans)
A favorite of hummingbirds and tea drinkers!
Edible leaves and flowers
Deer Resistant
Despite
the common name of "sage", Pineapple Sage is actually in the mint family (Lamiaceae). The name of pineapple sage comes from the scent of the leaves when crushed (the strength of the aroma varies depending temperature and moisture levels). A perennial native to the forests in the Sierra Madre del Sur mountains of Mexico and Guatemala,
Salvia elegans
was introduced as an ornamental garden plant around 1870. Hardy only in zones 8-11 it is grown as an annual in cooler climates.
The striking red edible flowers attract hummingbirds! Fast growing and blooms late in the season.
Plant:
full sun in moist, well-drained soil
Water:
Plants will wilt if too dry; leaves will begin to curl up when the plant is dry. Keep evenly moist throughout the season to prevent leaves from dropping.
Prune:
Pinch out the center of the plant when young to produce more branching for denser growth.
