Great old-time tomato flavor! This heirloom tomato was developed in the early 1930's by M.C. “Radiator Charlie” Byles, a radiator repairman in Logan, West Virginia. Byles cross-bred 4 varieties of tomatoes - German Johnson, Beefsteak, an Italian variety, and an English variety and  began selling his new tomato variety  seedlings in the 1940's for one dollar each. Customers drove up to 200 miles for his famous plants that bore tasty tomatoes averaging two and a half pounds. With these sales, Charlie managed to pay off his $6,000 mortgage in only six years, and so the tomato was named Mortgage Lifter.

Shipping Policy
Please note that plants are seasonal items. We begin shipping plants, with the exception of onion transplants, in mid-March. Plant shipping is paused during the heat of the summer, then resumed in early September through late November.

NOTE: Not all plants listed on our website are available for shipping. Non-shippable plants are marked either "LOCAL ONLY" or "Non-Shippable". Full refunds are issued for plants that are ordered, but not available within the shipping season.

If you order plants in the shipping off-season, they will automatically be back-ordered and shipped during our shipping seasons.

We use primarily USPS for shipping. If you prefer another carrier, please contact us before placing an order and we will quote the price of your order plus shipping.
