Description Delivery Information

This popular heirloom tomato from Virgina and North Carolina is one of the four parent lines of the 'Mortgage Lifter' tomato and very similar in flavor. Pink-red fruits average 3/4 to 1-1/2 lbs. with generally smooth tops. Turns pink with yellow shoulders when mature. Good for slicing or canning. Fruits have few seeds. Plants are very productive and fairly resistant to disease. Potato-leaf strain. Days to maturity: 76
Tomatoes love hot days and cool nights. For the best tomato harvest:

Growing conditions
  • Fertile, well-drained soil
  • Soil pH of 6.0-6.8
  • Moderate to high levels of potassium (P) and potash (K)
  • Transplant when daytime temperatures reach 70F and night time temperatures are above 55F
  • Average spacing: 12-18" between plants in rows 36-48" apart.
Harvest
  • For storage and shipping, harvest when the blossom end turns pink.
  • For fresh market harvest when color develops but fruits are still firm.
Storage
  • Store ripe tomatoes at 45-50F and 90-95% relative humidity.
  • Hold mature-green tomatoes for ripening at 65-70F.
Pest and Disease Prevention
  • Avoid overhead irrigation
  • Practice crop rotations with all Solanceae species
  • Staking and orienting rows to increase air circulation can aid in disease prevention.
Notes:
  • Deep, infrequent watering encourages deep rooting and higher quality fruit production
  • Indeterminate varieties should be staked, caged, or trellised to obtain best yields and to prevent disease
