Description

Did you know you can grow you own fertilizer and mulch, feed beneficial soil organisms and pollinators, suppress weeds, prevent erosion and break up hard soils - all by taking a break in the winter?

That's right! Growing a cover crop in your garden soils over the winter can do just that, with almost no help from you. Starting in September and continuing through the end of October, you can sow seeds that not only feed your soil and improve it's texture, but also suppress weeds that inevitably pop up in the Spring.

Crimson Clover (Trifolium incarnatum)
  • Shade and cold tolerant
  • Fixes nitrogen in the soil
  • Aids in erosion control
1 lb mix covers 500 sq. ft. (approx. sixteen 4' x 8' raised beds)

As a winter cover crop, sow in September through October.
