Thyme, English (Thymus vulgaris)
Thyme leaves are small, but powerful! A common culinary herb, this perennial herb is a must-have in the herb garden or in containers.
Thyme grows as a ground cover and is well suited to rock gardens and in-between stepping stones. As a Mediterranean plant, Thyme thrives in well-drained soil and full sun.
The savory flavor of English Thyme pairs well with other Mediterranean herbs such as French Tarragon, Oregano and Rosemary.
Thyme blooms in the spring and attracts beneficial flies and wasps, early butterflies and honey bees. After thyme has bloomed, prune thyme by pulling the plant branches into a "ponytail" and cut the stems just past the spent blooms. By pruning after blooming, you will encourage new growth and discourage "woodiness" at the base.
